With nearly 7 pubs closing every day of the week, and local pubs under threat, we believe that the Government should be doing more to Save The Great British Pub.
33% of the price of every pint goes in "Beer Tax" to the Chancellor. Labour plan to increase this further, hitting responsible drinkers once again in favour of irresponsible binge drinkers and yobs who cause misery on our high streets and in our community.

loss of well over 3,000 pubs
and 24,000 jobs in the industry
during the past year alone.
Mark Reckless said: "All small
business have suffered to one
degree or another under Labour
from regulation and being used
as unpaid tax-collectors, but
pubs have suffered terribly, many have had to close , and pubs need a Conservative Government to put things right."
We are calling on the Government to help save our pubs and safeguard jobs by:
- Cutting taxes on lower alcohol drinks such as beer and raising taxes on problem drinks like high strength ciders and alcopops in order to use the tax system to target binge drinking whilst ensuring that responsible drinkers and the traditional British pub are not unfairly penalised
- Enforcing existing laws to deal firmly with irresponsible drinkers & premises
- Trusting adults to make informed choices, not punish them for the actions of an irresponsible minority
- Supporting the British pub as a vital part of local communities

If only we knew! If only we understood quite how much of our income is being confiscated in tax! If only it were all clearly clearly set out!
I have previously mentioned the brilliant initiative by the hairdresser who has taken to presenting his customers with an itemised bill, showing quite how much ends up, directly or indirectly with the Treasury. How much more shocking would be such a bill presented in a pub. As excise duties have risen, revenue has been driven across the Channel, pubs have gone out of business and communities have suffered. Pubs are now closing at the rate of one a day: so much for the theory that beer sales are unaffected by recessions.
What can you do about it? Well, if nothing else, you can sign this petition in support of the campaign by the brilliant Jeremy Hunt. We’re not asking for subsidies or government intervention. On the contrary, we want government non-intervention, in the sense that we want an end to punitive levies.
As the most eloquent, patriotic, subversive, prejudiced, witty and humane of all Tories once put it: “There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn”.

We should be proud of our brewers and proud of our pub industry and do what we can to support them - which is why we are launching this campaign."
